Financial Markets Roadmap for Transforming the Global Food System

The food system as a whole needs to follow a pathway to achieve sustainability by 2050, given its current negative impact on climate, nature and society. Unless food systems are transformed, humanity will be unable to limit temperature increases to 1.5ºC by 2050, and to restore nature and achieve the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (including ‘zero hunger’) before 2030. In particular, financial institutions need to deploy their firepower to support such transformation. If done inclusively and sustainably such a transformation could unlock $4.5 trillion a year in new business opportunities.

Planet Tracker’s report, ‘Financial Markets Roadmap for Transforming the Global Food System’ sets out clear steps for the financial community to achieve a sustainable food system by 2050 – read now.

During UNFSS +2 in July 2023, GFFN co-hosted a session presenting this report – A roadmap to align food and finance to the 2030 Agenda and climate goals. This session took stock of the progress of companies’ commitments and actions towards the objectives of the 2030 Agenda, with a specific focus on food, and explored possible actions and pathways food systems companies and those funding them must follow to support a regenerative, nourishing and equitable food future. Overall, the event highlighted the need for a clear roadmap that enables a transition for food systems to meet global climate and nature goals and showcase particular examples of transformative actions that are already underway with an emphasis on regenerative transitions. GFFN Principal and WBCSD Executive Vice President Diane Holdorf was a speaker on the panel – Watch the recording now.
